Exceptional antique French writing table (bureau plat) in the Louis XVI style, dating to approximately 1870–1900 during or shortly after the Napoleon III / Second Empire period. This is an authentic period piece with the hallmarks of quality French provincial cabinetmaking throughout.
Construction & Design Highlights:
Oval top with molded ogee edge profile in dark walnut/mahogany veneer
Herringbone/chevron parquetry veneer apron running the full perimeter of the frieze — a classic and labor-intensive French cabinetry technique
Hand-carved floral/foliate rosette corner blocks at all four leg-to-apron junctions — carved in relief, not applied appliqués
Four fluted, tapered turned legs with ring-and-disc collar detailing at the capital — a defining Louis XVI motif
X-form curved stretcher with central turned urn finial — strongly associated with Napoleon III and Second Empire furniture forms
Full-width frieze drawer with original iron keyhole escutcheon and working lock mechanism
Pine secondary wood in the drawer box — the standard and expected construction method for authentic French period furniture
Provenance:
This piece came from a private Miami estate. French furniture was widely imported into elite South Florida and Caribbean households in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and this piece is entirely consistent with that pipeline.
Condition (please read carefully and review all photos):
Surface scratches, minor scuffs, and rich natural patina consistent with age — adds to the antique character
Minor veneer separation at one rounded end corner — visible in photos
X-form stretcher is detached from the legs; all original stretcher components and central urn finial are present and included with the sale
The mortise on one of the legs needs repair
Drawer slides and functions
Structurally solid — legs and apron joints are tight with no wobble
No maker's mark found
