This striking pair of vintage porcelain lamps features sculptural cabbage leaf forms decorated with colorful butterflies in vivid shades of green, pink, violet-blue, and white. Created from Chinese export porcelain bok choy/cabbage leaf vases and later professionally mounted as lamps by Richard Ray Custom Design of Los Angeles, the pair beautifully blends chinoiserie elegance with glamorous Hollywood Regency style.
What I especially love about these lamps is the incredible texture and movement throughout the porcelain bodies. The leafy surfaces are not simply painted — the details can actually be felt, giving the lamps a wonderfully dimensional, organic quality. The softly scalloped leaf edges at the top add another beautiful sculptural detail and make the silhouettes feel especially elegant. The butterfly decoration and saturated green coloration create an almost garden-like vibrancy, while the gilt wood bases add warmth and richness to the overall presentation. They have the kind of layered, collected look often found in high-end Palm Beach or designer showroom interiors from the 1970s and 1980s.
The fact that these were likely custom-made from decorative porcelain vases makes them more unique and elevated than standard production lamps. Richard Ray Custom Design was known for creating upscale decorator lighting in Los Angeles, and the quality of the mounting and presentation reflects that higher-end custom approach beautifully.
These lamps would make an incredible statement on bedside tables, a console, buffet, or entryway chest and work especially well in Hollywood Regency, chinoiserie, maximalist, eclectic, or Palm Beach-inspired interiors. Each lamp can be operated either from the socket switch or the cord switch for added convenience.
Both lamps retain their original Richard Ray Custom Design Los Angeles labels.els.
