This handmade antique fabric stamper is a richly textured, visually striking piece that speaks to the intricate craftsmanship of traditional textile printing. It was originally used in the centuries-old art of block printing, most likely in India, where such tools played a vital role in decorating cotton and silk fabrics with repeating motifs. The block is carved from a dense, darkened wood, aged beautifully over time, with a deeply tactile surface that highlights the artisan’s skill. The pattern features a series of symmetrical, teardrop-shaped floral motifs, each enclosed in a spiked, petal-like frame reminiscent of a lotus or stylized paisley design. These motifs are evenly spaced and aligned in diagonal rows, creating a rhythmic, almost architectural repetition. Small, leaf-like carvings fill the negative spaces between each larger motif, adding both detail and cohesion to the overall pattern. With its organic shapes and rhythmic geometry, the design evokes a sense of balance and flow, characteristic of traditional Indian textile patterns.
Measuring 6 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 2.5 inches high, and weighing 12 ounces it is a unique piece of art. Signs of wear and use, aged patina, small losses. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Though no longer used for printing, this block makes a compelling decorative object—a beautiful blend of history, art, and texture—perfect for display on a shelf, tabletop, or within a curated vignette.
