Rustic Radiance: A Pair of Hand-Painted 'Gaudy' Pearlware Plates
Staffordshire, England, Circa 1840
This vibrant pair of scalloped-rim plates represents the height of the English "Folk Art" pottery tradition. Unlike the mass-produced transferwares of the period, these pieces were decorated freehand, meaning no two plates are ever exactly identical.
The design centers on a bold, oversized Peony or Zinnia (often referred to as a "Purple Bloom" in period inventories) rendered in a saturated carmine-purple enamel. The flower is anchored by a bright yellow "stippled" center and flanked by broad, confident sweeps of forest-green foliage. The border is particularly striking, featuring a "strong blue" band—a specialty of the Staffordshire enamellers—punctuated by stylized pink buds that create a rhythmic, rotating frame for the central bloom.
Measurements:
Diameter: 8 inches (20.3 cm)
Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Markings: Authenticated with an impressed five-leaf clover (or cinquefoil) mark on the base. This mark is traditionally associated with the Godwin family of potters or Hicks, Meigh & Johnson, both prominent Staffordshire firms known for high-quality export wares during the 1830s and 40s.
Historical Context: The 'Gaudy' Appeal
By 1840, the "Gaudy" palette—characterized by bold primary colors and oversized floral motifs—had become an international sensation. These wares were specifically designed for the "cottage" market and for export to the United States (where they are often called "Gaudy Dutch" if they follow specific patterns).
The Pearlware body was the perfect canvas for these enamels. Because the glaze contains a small amount of cobalt, it has a faint blue-white tint that makes the hand-painted colors appear even more luminous. The brushwork here is "naive" but highly skilled; the decorator had to apply the paint quickly and confidently before the porous glaze could absorb it, resulting in the "spontaneous" energy that makes these pieces so desirable today.
