Arcadian Dreams: 18th-Century Lille Faience Tile Plaques in Camaïeu Bleu
Late-18th Century
German, Nurnberg
Circa 1770–1790
Each plaque is composed of multiple individual tin-glazed earthenware tiles assembled into a single unified composition and mounted in its original dark-stained wooden frame. The decoration is carried out throughout in camaïeu bleu — a delicate wash of pale blue ground overlaid with more densely applied cobalt for the pictorial passage.
The pictorial field of each plaque is organized around a tall oval cartouche suspended from an elaborately painted ribbon bow, the knot centered by a small fleurette rosette, with the trailing ends of the ribbon curling freely across the upper ground. This specific ornamental conceit — the oval medallion held aloft by a silken bow — is quintessentially Louis XVI in character and firmly situates the plaques within the decorative vocabulary of the 1770s and 1780s.
The pastoral subjects within the cartouches are drawn directly from the widely circulated print tradition inspired by François Boucher and his circle, whose bergerie compositions — scenes of idealized shepherds and shepherdesses in Arcadian landscapes — dominated French decorative imagery from the 1740s onward and were enthusiastically adopted by faience painters across multiple centers. In the first plaque a shepherdess is shown seated at ease upon a rocky outcrop, her drapery falling gracefully around her, one hand raised contemplatively to her chin as a lamb nuzzles close beside her; beyond, feathery trees and a distant landscape with architecture recede into a pale sky. Her companion plaque presents a standing shepherd in easy contrapposto, his crook in hand, pausing mid-stride against a similarly wooded and atmospheric setting. The figural handling in both is accomplished, with particular care given to the modeling of drapery and to the soft atmospheric treatment of the background, suggesting a painter of some training rather than a purely provincial hand.
The extensive and even craquelure visible across the glaze surface of both panels is entirely consistent with authentic eighteenth-century faience production and contributes to the warm, time-worn character of the pair. The dark frames, whose profile and construction are consistent with a late eighteenth or very early nineteenth-century date, may preserve something of the plaques' original presentation context, likely a chimneypiece surround, boiserie overmantel, or wall installation of the kind for which southern French manufactories — notably those active in Marseille and across Provence — regularly produced tile panels of exactly this decorative type.
