Gilded Glamour: Rosenthal Fornasetti "The Indian Beauty" Plate
This striking porcelain plate, produced by Rosenthal in the 1980s, features one of the most exotic interpretations from Piero Fornasetti’s legendary "Temi e Variazioni" (Themes and Variations) series. Known as "Motiv 3" or "The Indian Beauty," the design reimagines the enigmatic face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri adorned with intricate jewelry, including an elaborate headpiece, earrings, and a nose ring. The black-and-white graphic illustration is elegantly framed by a gold-rimmed edge, characteristic of the high-quality fine porcelain produced during the Rosenthal collaboration. This partnership in the 1980s was instrumental in reviving Fornasetti’s international reputation by applying his mid-century iconography to functional everyday objects.
The muse behind the series, Lina Cavalieri, was discovered by Fornasetti in a 19th-century French magazine. He was captivated by her archetypal, classic features, which he likened to a Greek statue or the "Gioconda". Throughout his career, Fornasetti used her face as a formal, graphic template, creating over 350 spontaneous and creative variations. This specific plate serves as a superb example of his ability to constantly reinvent a single motif, transforming a classic portrait into a sophisticated decorative statement.

Historical Context
Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) believed that a single idea could provide infinite inspiration through constant evolution and reinterpretation. While he explored various themes—including the sun, playing cards, and harlequins—the "Temi e Variazioni" series remains his most famous and enduring work. The mark on the underside of this piece features the Rosenthal/Germany logo in black and orange above the iconic Fornasetti hand and paintbrush symbol, specifically identifying it as "Motiv 3".
