A rare and refined 19th-century French jewelry casket, dating to the Second Empire period, circa 1860–1880. This elegant object d’art is crafted from brilliant cut crystal and richly detailed gilt bronze, with the lid beautifully finished by a hand-painted miniature portrait signed by Jean Derval.
The faceted crystal body catches the light beautifully, creating a luminous effect from every angle. The underside features a detailed starburst cut, adding depth and sparkle to the piece. Surrounding the crystal is an ornate gilt bronze frame decorated with scrollwork, garlands, and floral details, giving the box its luxurious French decorative character.
The hinged lid is crowned with a delicate portrait miniature of a young woman, painted in soft, expressive tones. The signature Jean Derval adds artistic and collectible interest, making this piece especially appealing to collectors of French decorative arts, portrait miniatures, and luxury antique objects.
Inside, the lid retains its original fitted mirror, adding both charm and function. Originally designed as a jewelry or trinket box, this casket is equally beautiful displayed on a vanity, writing desk, vitrine, or dressing table.
This piece represents the opulent craftsmanship of 19th-century France, where even functional objects were created with exceptional artistry and decorative refinement.
