A striking late 19th-century American Victorian armchair showcasing the richly carved walnut craftsmanship and dramatic decorative character of the Renaissance Revival period.
The substantial walnut frame features an elaborately carved and pierced crest with scrolling foliage, fan-form ornament and a central carved floral medallion. Beautifully figured burl-walnut panels accent the crest rail, while graceful scrolling arms feature additional incised decoration. The shield-shaped upholstered back is deeply tufted, complemented by a generously proportioned upholstered seat and distinctive turned, ringed front legs.
With its tall, sculptural silhouette and richly colored walnut frame, this chair makes an impressive accent piece for a traditional library, study, bedroom, sitting room or eclectic interior. The combination of carved ornament, figured walnut and burgundy upholstery gives it considerable visual presence.
Circa 1875–1885. American. Victorian Renaissance Revival with Eastlake influence.
