This antique jacket is a rare ceremonial garment from Southeast Asia, worn only by young, unmarried women, featuring intricate embroidery, tiny mirrors, and shells.
It originates from the Kauer tribe of southern Sumatra, Indonesia, primarily created for young, unmarried women to wear over a sarong during ceremonies and festivals.
It dates from the late 19th century. The Krakatoa volcanic eruption of 1883, to all intents and purposes, stopped its production. Because it's no longer produced, the Kauer jacket is extremely rare, seen often in museum collections. I recall, for instance having seen a couple, a long time ago, in the Rockefeller Wing of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
It's made of handwoven cotton dyed with indigo, turmeric, and pink sepang arranged in alternating vertical stripes. Elaborate embroidery covers the front and back with gold threads. There are small mirrors too, which are said to symbolize protectiveness. The tiny cowrie shells represent fertility and therefore prosperity.
The jacket is copped short and has long straight sleeves. The front opening has no fasteners. The lining is of white cotton.
