A Splash of Murano: Set of Six Glass Fish Figures
Late 20th Century
This charming collection of six miniature table decorations captures the playfulness of tropical marine life. Each piece is a unique study in color and form, featuring two distinct fish—ranging from striped angelfish to spotted reef dwellers—frozen in a dynamic "swimming" pose atop a stylized glass wave.
The set is a masterclass in lampworking (a lume), a traditional Venetian technique where glass rods are melted over a small torch and shaped by hand with incredible precision. The use of vibrant cobalt blues, fiery reds, and sunny yellows, often accented with white "latticino" or spotted details, is characteristic of the mid-to-late century Italian aesthetic.
Further sets are available.
Dimensions: 3 inches high (7.6 cm) x 2 1/2 inches diameter (6.4 cm).
Markings: Each base retains two original foil labels: "Made in Italy" and "K's Collection" (Importer's mark).
The Murano Legacy: Lampwork and the Giftware Era
Murano glass has been the gold standard of European glassmaking for over 700 years. In the late 20th century, many Venetian furnaces pivoted toward high-quality "miniatures" like these to satisfy a growing global demand for Italian luxury.
These specific models utilize a mirrored base to reflect the light through the translucent glass, creating the illusion of shimmering water. The central support is often referred to as a "glass splash," showcasing the artisan's ability to manipulate molten glass into fluid, gravity-defying shapes. Unlike mass-produced molded glass, the subtle differences in the fins and eyes of these fish reveal the "honesty of the hand" found in genuine Italian lampwork.
