An Extremely Attractive And Very Good Quality Mid 18th Century, George II Period, Walnut Corner Armchair, Having Extremely Well Figured Top Rail, Over Attractive Pierced Back Splats And Superbly Carved Shaped Scrolling Arms, Over Drop In Seat Raised On Elegant Cabriole Leg To Front And And Square Legs To Back And Sides.
Corner chairs, sometimes known as a roundabout chairs, were specifically designed to fit snugly into the corner of a room, making extremely efficient use of space, as well as serving a decorative purpose as they were often adorned with rich carving and ornate detailing.
During the Georgian and Victorian eras, corner chairs became very popular additions to many homes, particularly in drawing rooms, parlors, bedrooms and hallways. The chairs were of course not only functional but also served as decorative accents, often reflecting the design aesthetics of the time.
Corner chair designs vary across different periods and styles, but as a general guide Georgian corner chairs feature more restrained designs, whilst Victorian corner chairs showcase elaborate carving, motifs and even upholstery.
This is a great example of an 18th Century Georgian Corner Chair, constructed from rich, dense walnut timbers which have retained a wonderful rich colour and surface. It also features some excellent decorative detailing, not least the absolutely exquisite carved scrolls at the end of each arm.
Overall the condition is good, with just a few old repairs and historic scuffs, scrapes etc which are now blending in with the overall character of the piece. There is one old repair to the frame in particular which should be pointed out, to the frame just above and to the right of the front leg, however this has been extremely well repaired and not only do you have to look hard to find it, but there is no structural concerns at all. The gallery of images does show this repair up close.
In terms of the drop in seat this is in good condition and appears to have been recently upholstered, however it is detachable so should one wish to change it for a different fabric then this can be easily and inexpensively carried out.
As with all items we offer for sale the chair has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement following purchase.
