The circular stepped top is … Read more A fabulous 19th century occasional table with a mahogany top with a cast iron base. The circular stepped top is attached to a brass pole with a clasp underneath that allows the top to rise and fall to the desired height. The brass pole is attached to a heavy duty brass outer column with vertical reeded decoration ending on a bulbus cast base. The table is supported by a heavy cast base with ball and claw feet and finished on oversized brass castors. The table was used in an english university and was used by lecturers during teaching. The height would have been adjusted whilst the user was presenting on a raised platform to students. A rare survivor, reassuringly heavy and of excellent quality. British, circa 1870.
