Crafted from … Read more A pair of antique Italian carved and gilded frames dating back to the 18th century from central Italy. Crafted from a single panel of Swiss pine, the frame was carved in the imaginative and dynamic style typical of the late Baroque period. The frame is dominated by fluidly intertwined C- and S-shaped scrolls; curled and jagged acanthus leaves lend a sense of organic movement. The upper cornice is particularly elaborate, featuring a stylized shell or floral motif that serves as a visual fulcrum, typical of decorative frames or "cartoccio" mirror frames. The fine gold leaf gilding was applied using gouache on a raw Sienna-colored bole. This rare pair of small frames originates from Central Italy and dates to the mid-1700s. Despite minor losses and older restorations visible in the gluing, as documented in the photo gallery, the frames, consistent with their dating, are in good condition. Both have undergone repeated woodworm treatments.
