An exceptional pair of antique Italian apothecary jars dating to the 1800s, these beautifully hand-painted ceramic vessels capture the romance and mystery of early pharmaceutical history. Rich in old-world character, each jar features a finely painted portrait medallion depicting a distinguished male figure rendered in vibrant tones of cobalt blue, golden ochre, green, and warm brown against a softly crackled ivory glaze.
The jars retain their original Latin pharmaceutical inscriptions, offering a fascinating glimpse into historical medicinal practices. One jar is labeled “U Ad Oculos,” translating to “Eye Ointment,” while the second bears the inscription “Pulp: Tamar,” referring to tamarind pulp, once commonly used as a digestive aid. These inscriptions connect the pieces directly to the traditions of 19th-century apothecaries, where such jars would have lined the shelves of pharmacies, monasteries, or medical cabinets storing remedies and compounds.
Measuring 5.25 inches high and 3 inches in diameter each, these jars are ideal for display in a kitchen, study, library, cabinet of curiosities, or European-inspired interior. They bring a sophisticated old-world atmosphere and a sense of scholarly refinement to any setting. Good antique condition, there are numerous chips big and small along the rims from use. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Each jar is individually hand-painted, showcasing the artistry and subtle irregularities that make antique Italian majolica so desirable. The beautifully aged craquelure glaze, softened wear along the edges, and rich hand-applied decoration give the pair an authentic timeworn elegance impossible to replicate. Their sculptural form, with gently domed lids and balanced proportions, creates a striking decorative presentation whether displayed together or incorporated into a broader collection of European ceramics and curiosities.
A remarkable decorative pair blending history, medicine, and artistry, these antique Italian apothecary jars are both conversation pieces and timeless home décor objects for collectors of majolica, pharmacy antiques, and historic European ceramics.
