Traditionally associated with protection, prosperity, and good fortune, Pixiu figures have long been prized in Asian decorative arts and were often displayed in homes or temples as protective symbols. This example has an especially animated form, with an open mouth, expressive features, and a wonderfully sculptural silhouette.

Cast in solid brass, the figure is richly detailed throughout with ornate surface decoration, raised bosses, scrolling motifs, and stylized armor-like treatment across the body. The elongated tail, fierce face, and clawed feet give the piece tremendous personality, while the aged patina softens the metal beautifully and adds depth to the casting.
