Rare large antique painted 8-panel byobu (folding screen) depicts a celestial maiden such as a Tennyo (heavenly maiden), Kisshoten, or a Chinese mythological immortal, a Phoenix (Hou-ou), a sacred bird in Japanese and Chinese culture, is a symbol of peace, prosperity, rebirth, and good fortune, and the lion-like creature appears to be a Karajishi (mythical lion) or spiritual guardian beast (in Buddhist and East Asian art, lions often symbolize protection, sacred power, and the ability to ward off evil spirits). The artwork expresses a mystical and spiritual world in which a sacred woman brings harmony and controls powerful spiritual forces. It is a very unique and visually powerful piece, especially appealing to collectors interested in Japanese mythology, spiritual art, and fantasy aesthetics. Inspired by Chinese and Buddhist themes.
Sealed by artist at the lower right corner. Necklace, hair decoration and blue scarf of the celestial maiden, and the lions' manes have raised relief (maki-e). Gouache, watercolor and ink on paper. Silk border. Lacquered dark brown wood frame with reticulated metal corners and plaques. Paper on back. Japan, circa Meiji to early Showa Era, circa late 1800s to 1930s.
Good to Fair condition - extensive age wear on the painting (scuff marks, some losses on paper, on the silk border and on lacquer of the lower edges of the frame (image #18); scratches, some staining); hinges (or joints) are in good condition; repairs on paper back.
