This beautifully preserved black chinoiserie chest of drawers by Habersham features hand-painted landscape motifs that include willow trees, peacocks, a bridge, a boat, a fisherman, a woman, and large pagodas on each side in gold, pink, and red. A central body of water on each drawer and on each side is painted in a soft, silvery-white that reflects light much like the real thing. These images celebrate 17th-19th-century Japanned furniture in color, style, fine detail, and delicacy. Ornate brass handles each feature a central seashell, and scrolling floral border trim throughout grounds the design and defines the shape. Four wide drawers glide smoothly and are very clean. The wood is painted black on all surfaces of the drawers, making them easy to wipe down. An ornate plinth base accented with a thick gold outline stands proud of the dresser, creating a solid foundation. A Habersham label is found inside the top drawer.
This dresser was originally purchased new in Dallas, Texas, at a Neiman Marcus Fortnight event, most likely the Asia/Oceana Japan-themed event of 1974, by a woman whose husband worked for the company. These Fortnight galas ran from 1957 to 1986, and were two-week events that celebrated different countries through fashion, design, culture, and food. Attended by local and international celebrities, including Sophia Loren, they were important social shopping events.
Habersham Furniture Co was founded by antique dealer Joyce Eddie of Georgia, and opened its first store in Tennessee in 1971. Joyce Eddie was inducted into the American Hall of Furniture in 2007 for her extensive contributions to the industry. Throughout the last 50+ years, Habersham has collaborated with New York's Plaza Hotel, Biltmore Estates (Asheville, North Carolina), and Hearst Castle (California) on collections inspired by those iconic destinations.

The majority of this wear is faint, small, and not noticeable without close inspection. Two more visible flaws include one scratch on the bottom drawer to the right of the peacocks, about one inch long, and a larger scuff on one side to the right of the large pagoda. less
