This rare and substantial set of eight 12-inch oblong platters represents the pinnacle of the Venture line by Nikko. Designed by the visionary Yūsuke Aida (Aida Associates) in the 1970s, the "Sierra" pattern is a masterclass in "Earthy Modern" aesthetics. These pieces successfully bridge the gap between traditional Japanese ceramic precision and the bold, geometric optimism of Mid-Century Modernism.
Each platter is crafted from high-quality, speckled cream stoneware and features a striking, rhythmic border of stylized sunbursts and squares in a sophisticated palette of burnt orange, chocolate brown, and sienna. The elongated 12-inch form is particularly desirable, offering a modern, tray-like silhouette that serves as a perfect canvas for Aida’s architectural pattern work.
Meet the Designer: Yūsuke Aida (1931–2015)
Yūsuke Aida was a pivotal figure in 20th-century ceramic and industrial design, known for his ability to fuse structural urban planning principles with organic artistry. In the early 1960s, Aida served as the Chief Designer at Bennington Potters in Vermont, where he worked alongside David Gil to develop the iconic "Vermont Modern" look.
Upon returning to Japan, he established Aida Associates, bringing his New England stoneware expertise to major manufacturers like Nikko. His work, characterized by its tactile "speckle" glazes and rhythmic geometry, is held in numerous permanent museum collections and remains highly sought after by collectors of "Japanese Modern" and "Brutalist-Light" design.
