So long before Ikea came along, cabinetmakers built the knock-down armoire. The construction is much the same but the components of the piece are not held together with any nails, screws or glue. The parts slot together with pegs, dovetails, tongue-and-groove and wooden cleats. No part of the armoire is too big to be placed anywhere and once put together it is as steady as a rock. The crown is impressive, made up of tiers of ogee molding. The sides have two flat panels, as do the doors which open a full 180 degrees on iron fiche hinges and they lock independently into a central stile. The front corners are chamfered and the back is in five pieces, all interlocking. Inside is a retro-fitted hat shelf and hanging pole, both which of simply lift out if unwanted. See less
