Charles-Edouard Jeanneret ( 1887 - 1965 ) known a Le Corbusier, was a French-Swiss architectural designer, painter, urban planner and writer who was one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as Modern Architecture. He designed building in Europe, Japan, India, and The Americas during a celebrated five decade career. Dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities, Le Corbusier was influential in concepts of 20th Century urban planning. Equally as significant in his oeuvre are his works as an artist in a multitude of mediums including painting, drawing and collage, sculpture, tapestry, enamel, and artist's books.
" La Poeme De L'Angle Droit " is a major work by Le Corbusier created between 1947 and 1953, published in 1955 as a limited edition book with nineteen color lithographs and accompanying texts. It is considered a synthesis of his worldview, exploring themes through color-coded " zones " and combining his handwritten poems with his own illustrations, making it an outstanding example of the medium and art form of Modern artist's books.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
In the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
The Galerie Berggruen + Cie in Paris was founded in 1947 by art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen ( 1914 - 2007 ). The gallery under the direction of Berggruen played a major role in the post World War II reception and dissemination of Modern Art, representing such influential artists as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, Paul Klee, and Le Corbusier among many others. Berggruen cultivated one of the most important and valuable private collections of Modern European Art in The Twentieth Century.
