Solomon " Sol " LeWitt ( 1928 - 2007 ) was an American artist of a Russian Jewish background, linked to various movements, including Conceptual Art and Minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960's with his Wall Drawings and " Structures " but was prolific in a wide range of mediums including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. Artworks by LeWitt have been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in many of the most prestigious museums and galleries around the world.
One of the most important American artists of The 20th Century, Sol LeWitt spent decades creating artworks that explore the potential ideas for making visual forms. He transformed these ideas into objects of exquisite beauty and elegance, deliberately introducing elements of chance and intuition into the creation of his works. His delicate balancing between thought and form, between order and disorder, between authorship and anonymity, has exerted an enormous influence on artists of subsequent generations.
The New York Film Festival is a film festival in New York City, presented by Film at Lincoln Center. Founded in 1963, it is one of the longest-running and most prestigious festivals in The United States. Since its beginnings, the festival has showcased the work of the most acclaimed filmmakers.
It has also collaborated with some of the most revered visual artists for its festival posters. They make up a roll call of influential art stars including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, Larry Rivers, Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella, James Rosenqusit, Jim Dine, and Saul Bass among many others.
LeWitt was an internationally celebrated artists for more than two decades before his collaboration on this poster in 1987. That year the festival poster went in a conceptual direction. Sol LeWitt took simple black-and-white lines and configures them in exquisite ways. The close positioning of the lines, and their varied directions inside the boxes suggest an image in motion - a motion picture if you will. New Yorkers have become familiar with LeWitt's work from their commute. The Columbus Circle subway station, near Lincoln Center, is home to one of the artist's final commissions, " Whirls and Twirls ( MTA ) " 2005.
