Alexander Calder ( 1898 - 1976 ) was an American born Modernist artist. Although primarily known for both his innovative kinetic mobiles and monumental public sculptures, Calder also created important paintings, prints, theater set designs, jewelry design, tapestries, rugs, and political and commercial commissioned posters. Born into a family of artists, his work first gained attention in the 1920's in Paris, and was soon championed by The Museum of Modern Art New York, resulting in his first retrospective exhibition in 1943. His artistic talents were world renowned by the 1960's. Calder is credited with creating some of the most important Modernist art works of The Twentieth Century.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
The first National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee was an organization formed in The United States in 1951 by 150 educators and clergymen to advocate for the civil liberties embodied in The Bill of Rights of The U.S. Constitution, notably the rights of free speech, religion, travel, and assembly. Its program and policy decisions were controlled by a self-perpetuating national council for most of its existence. The mission wanted greater involvement in progressive causes in addition to classic civil rights issues, feeling that other organizations were not as vigorous in their defense of civil liberties as they might have been.
