Exceptional early engraving signed “Petr. de Iode”, depicting Potiphar’s wife attempting to seduce Joseph, grasping his cloak as he escapes. The scene corresponds to Genesis 39 and was a favored subject in early printmaking for its dramatism and expressive narrative.
A print of the same composition and dimensions is held in the Rijksmuseum, which dates an early edition to 1579 and a later one to 1646. The Antwerp De Jode family, active across four generations between circa 1550 and 1670, were among the leading publishers, designers, and engravers of the Flemish Golden Age of printmaking.
This engraving is printed on early laid paper and shows a watermark in the form of a pot with a left-side handle holding a long-stemmed flower, consistent with 17th-century French paper produced for the Flemish market.
The plate is numbered “3”, signed “Petr. de Iode,” and inscribed in Latin below the image:
Nititur ad vetitos iuvenem compellere amores
Putephar; amissa veste, sed ipse fugit. Gen. 39.
(“Potiphar’s wife strives to compel the young man toward forbidden love; but he, leaving his garment behind, flees.”)
This original antique engraving is scarce outside museum collections and represents a fine example of Flemish Golden Age printmaking. The subject is timeless and, as such, continues to resonate as a source of inspiration, reflecting themes of restraint, integrity, and moral resolve.
