These four Hollywood Regency faux bois armchairs were made by J. Gattuso & Son in New York. I've owned them since about 1980. I'm told that they were made for the short-lived Sun Grove on Union Street in San Francisco, but that story may be apocryphal.
Over time the chairs' fabric backs had become faded and discolored. Rather than sacrifice the perfectly preserved leather seating surfaces to a re-upholstering process, I oh-so-carefully painted the backs. The shade of blue that I chose is the complement to the color of the leather, opposite on the color wheel. It also enhances the chairs' Hollywood Regency glamour.
The chairs' size and heft make them stay comfortable throughout a long dinner party!
