This unique double cigar box was made between 1910 and 1930. It is labeled “Patent Applied For”.
The Factory No. 1888 identifies the production factory site in York, PA that is associated with the Mohawk Chief brand. This was a prominent vintage cigar and tobacco brand produced by The Charles Company. They are primarily famous among tobacciana collectors for producing the Mohawk Chief brand of pipe and chewing tobacco.
The 1st District of PA refers to the federal tax district. The IRS statistics of 1907 indicates that there were 1200 cigar factories in York County. By the 1920’s, The York County Cigar Manufacturing Association boasted that they were “the home of the 5 cent cigars” and that 20% of US cigars were produced in York County. (In the 1800’s Pennsylvania lead the nation in tobacco distribution.)
The larger “Caution Notice” branded stamp is a legal requirement introduced in 1910. The smaller branded stamp indicates that the cigars were retailed at not more than five cents each. The branded stamps are burnt in, engraved with black ink.
The Number 25 indicates the quantity of cigars held in each box.
The inside removable panels appear to be made of Spanish Cedar. These have the ability to prevent cigars from drying out and extend the aging process. Spanish Cedar has been used for this purpose since the 1840’s and became standard for packaging home made cigars and remains so today.
This unique style double box has beautiful dovetail design with small ornate brass hinges and latch fixtures. The top inside lid has original mirrors that were used to make the early premium boxes more appealing and luxurious to customers. The reflection of the bountiful cigars amplifies the display when opening. An early marketing ploy!
One of a kind cigar box, with its history within written.

I just cleaned it, did not work on the scratches. Hinges and latches are intact and work well, with some rust. The inside mirrors are weathered with age, as to be expected. There is minor damage to the cedar lining. All this is shown in the photographs. less
