Antique German Westerwald Blue Incised Stoneware Jug, Circa 19th Century
A magnificent and richly decorated example of German Westerwald stoneware, this impressive salt glazed jug displays the bold cobalt blue ground and deeply incised foliate decoration that represents the Westerwald tradition at its most accomplished and visually compelling. The Westerwald region of the Rhineland has been producing salt glazed stoneware of exceptional quality since the 16th century, and this substantial jug is a worthy representative of that celebrated and enduring ceramic heritage.
The decoration is breathtaking in its ambition and execution — a sweeping, deeply incised composition of pomegranates, exotic fruits, scrolling acanthus leaves, and botanical flourishes covering virtually every inch of the generous globular body in a continuous celebration of the decorator's art. The incised grey stoneware decoration plays magnificently against the rich cobalt blue ground, the contrast between the warm salt glazed grey of the incised lines and the deep, lustrous blue of the ground creating a graphic boldness and visual drama that few ceramic traditions can match. A beautifully executed star flower on one panel adds a further note of decorative distinction and technical accomplishment.
The globular ovoid body rises to a multi-ringed neck with strap handle — a classic and confidently proportioned Westerwald form that balances visual weight and elegance with the practical utility for which these jugs were originally produced. The cobalt blue accent on the handle strap is a refined and quality conscious detail that speaks to the care and ambition of the original maker. The base displays the characteristic concentric wheel marks of authentic period hand thrown production — a pleasing and authenticating constructional detail visible in the unglazed base.
A small stone pop in the glaze — a natural and entirely expected firing characteristic of salt glazed stoneware — is the only condition note and does absolutely nothing to detract from the piece's considerable decorative presence and quality.
A bold, beautiful, and technically accomplished piece of German Westerwald stoneware that will command attention in any collection of European ceramics or decorative interior.
