Antique Japanese Satsuma Vase with Figural Panels and Raijin Thunder God, Meiji Period, Circa 1880–1900
A richly decorated and visually spectacular example of Japanese Meiji period Satsuma ware, this impressive vase displays the extraordinary technical virtuosity and decorative ambition that made Satsuma pottery one of the most celebrated and avidly collected ceramic traditions of the late 19th century. Every surface of this exceptional vase rewards close examination — layer upon layer of raised gilt work, jeweled enamel dotting, and finely painted figural scenes combining to create an object of almost overwhelming decorative richness and complexity.
The vase body is divided into beautifully composed figural panels depicting elaborately robed court figures amid stylized landscape elements — mountains, clouds, and architectural details rendered with the fine, practiced brushwork of a skilled Meiji period decorator thoroughly at home with the demanding Satsuma technique. The figures are painted with exceptional attention to facial expression, costume detail, and courtly narrative, each face individualized and expressive in a way that distinguishes quality Meiji Satsuma from more mass produced export examples of the period.
The reverse panel features a dynamic and boldly painted depiction of Raijin — the Japanese god of thunder and lightning — a powerful and highly sought after decorative subject among collectors of Japanese art and Satsuma ceramics. The Raijin figure is rendered with dramatic energy and movement, his characteristic drum rings surrounding him as he commands the heavens with fierce authority — a striking counterpoint to the serene courtly scenes on the obverse and a testament to the decorator's range and ambition.
The geometric border panels are executed in the classic Satsuma vocabulary of raised gilt work, honeycomb diaper, fan motifs, and richly colored enamel panels in iron red, teal, mustard, and brown — each element applied with painstaking care and precision. The characteristic cream colored crackle glaze body provides a perfect ground for the elaborate decoration, its fine network of crazing entirely consistent with the nature and age of authentic Satsuma ware. Raised white and colored enamel jeweling adds further tactile richness throughout.
The vase is unmarked on the plain cream base — not uncommon for quality Meiji period Satsuma production — and presents with typical age related wear and minor decoration wear consistent with its more than a century of life. A tight hairline at the top rim is honestly noted and appropriately reflected in the asking price. No chips are present.
A bold, beautiful, and technically accomplished piece of Japanese Meiji period Satsuma ware that will command attention in any collection or interior.
