Antique Burmese Alabaster Seated Buddha, Mandalay Period, Circa Late 19th–Early 20th Century
A serene and spiritually compelling example of Burmese Buddhist devotional sculpture, this beautifully carved alabaster seated Buddha represents the celebrated Mandalay period tradition of alabaster carving that produced some of the most refined and deeply expressive Buddhist sculpture in the entire Southeast Asian canon. Carved from the distinctive warm cream alabaster quarried near Sagyin, north of Mandalay — the same sacred stone used for the great temple Buddhas of Upper Burma — this intimate and finely worked figure radiates the quiet meditative presence and gentle spiritual authority that the finest Burmese Buddhist sculpture achieves so naturally and so movingly.
The Buddha is depicted in the classic meditation posture — dhyana mudra — seated upon a stepped throne base with hands resting serenely in the lap, the eyes cast downward in deep contemplative repose beneath elegantly arched brows. The characteristic Burmese ushnisha — the pointed cranial protrusion symbolizing the Buddha's enlightened wisdom — rises with confident authority above the serene and gently smiling face, while the large distinctive ear flanges recall the heavy golden earrings of the Buddha's princely origins before his renunciation. Traces of the original red painted robe lines and gold lacquer decoration survive on the carved monastic robes — authentic and beautiful remnants of the figure's original devotional splendor that add immeasurably to its age and spiritual character.
Particularly noteworthy is the hollowed interior of the base — visible from beneath — a deeply significant and intentional feature of Burmese Buddhist sculptural tradition, as devotional figures were frequently hollowed to receive sacred relic deposits, votive offerings, or consecrating texts, transforming the carved stone image into a living receptacle of spiritual power and blessing. This detail elevates the figure from a fine decorative object into a piece of genuine devotional and cultural significance.
At 8¼ inches tall this is a beautifully scaled and satisfyingly substantial figure — large enough to command presence on a shelf, altar, or table while remaining intimate and personal in scale. Light bruising and paint wear and loss are consistent with the figure's age and devotional use, and add to rather than detract from its authentic character and spiritual patina.
A genuinely moving and historically significant piece of Burmese Buddhist devotional art at a very accessible price point.
