About the artist :
Itzchak Tarkay (1935–2012) was a celebrated Israeli artist known for his elegant, stylized depictions of women in moments of leisure and quiet introspection. His work blends influences from Art Deco, Impressionism, and modern figurative traditions, resulting in a distinctive visual language defined by bold color, graceful line, and refined composition.
Born in Subotica (then Yugoslavia, now Serbia), Tarkay survived the hardships of World War II before immigrating to Israel in 1949. He later studied at the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv, where he developed his signature style under the influence of modern European masters.
Tarkay rose to international prominence for his serene interior and café scenes, often portraying sophisticated women in contemplative or social settings. His compositions are recognized for their harmonious color palettes, flattened perspectives, and decorative elegance—evoking both intimacy and timeless glamour.
