Truly a rare and significant piece of Chicago maritime history, and a beautiful silver piece! This trophy reads — "1888 Challenge Trophy, awarded to winners of barge race at Chicago Navy annual regatta. Becomes the property of club winning 3 times. Iroquois Boat Club. (Other side:) Presented by A.G. Spalding & Bros, J.L. Van Uxem, Jenner & Graham Gun Co., The John Wilkinson Co."
The engraving shows this was a gift from sporting legend AG Spalding, and names several prominent Gilded Age retailers from Chicago. The Iroquois Boat Club was a rowing club based in Chicago until 1910. The trophy was crafted by the Meriden B. Company (as seen on seal on underside) using their premium quadruple-plated silver. It has a natural and beautiful patina and coloring and an amazingly detailed, prestigious silhouette. Would be an amazing find for anyone interested in maritime culture, sporting history, or rare Chicagoana.
