A charming mid-century composition that depicts a cluster of closely nestled houses as their angular rooftops form a rhythmic patchwork against a soft open sky, executed in oil onto board by Swedish artist Wilhelm Wik (1897-1987), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Tessin Institute in Paris, to name a few.

The scene appears gently elevated, allowing the viewer to look across the rooftops toward a calm, pale horizon. A small domed structure rises subtly among the buildings, adding a sense of place and quiet architectural character.

Rendered in a modernist style, the painting embraces simplified forms and flattened perspective. The houses are reduced to bold geometric shapes, outlined with confident, dark lines that lend structure and clarity to the composition. There is a deliberate absence of fine detail, allowing the interplay of shape and colour to take centre stage.

The colour palette is warm yet restrained: soft creams and sandy tones form the buildings, while pops of terracotta and burnt orange on the rooftops introduce gentle contrast. These are balanced by deep, expressive greens in the foreground foliage, painted in loose, gestural strokes that bring movement and texture to the lower edge of the scene. The sky is rendered in a calm, neutral wash, enhancing the overall sense of stillness and light.

Brushwork varies across the surface: the architecture is treated with flatter, more controlled applications of paint, while the greenery is handled with thicker, more fluid strokes, creating a pleasing tension between order and spontaneity.

This oil on board is presented in a characterful wooden frame which features a rustic wood finish with visible grain and a stepped gilt inner border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There is some paint loss to the gilded section of the frame, consistent with age, however this does not detract from its overall appearance or charm.
