Tall chest with mirror by Kimbel & Cabus, New York, circa 1865–1880. Executed in walnut, this example reflects the firm’s refined domestic production during the late Victorian period, incorporating elements of Renaissance Revival and Modern Gothic design. The case features paneled drawer fronts, original turned pulls, and a vertically scaled form rising to an integrated mirror flanked by small upper compartments and a pierced gallery.
The interior retains the original paper label reading “A. Kimbel & J. Cabus, Cabinet Makers and Decorators, New York,” confirming attribution to one of the most innovative American cabinetmaking firms of the 19th century, noted for their contributions to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. A documented and increasingly scarce example of American Victorian furniture from a recognized New York maker.
