Excellent condition. A visually striking offset lithographic poster after a photograph by celebrated Italian photographer Franco Fontana, depicting a residential street in San Francisco. The composition presents a row of wooden houses rendered in dramatic perspective beneath an intensely saturated cobalt-blue sky. Overhead utility wires intersect the architectural geometry, creating a dynamic network of lines that animate the composition. Fontana is internationally renowned for transforming ordinary landscapes and urban environments into powerful graphic compositions through his masterful use of colour saturation, geometry, and minimalist framing. In this image, the artist emphasises the formal rhythm of the façades and windows, allowing the contrast between the pale architecture and the deep blue sky to dominate the visual field. Created in 1979, during a period when Fontana was exploring urban subjects alongside his iconic landscapes, the photograph exemplifies the artist’s ability to reduce the built environment to pure compositional elements—colour planes, lines, and architectural volumes. The intense chromatic palette and strong perspective lend the image an almost abstract quality while maintaining a clear sense of place. Printed by Rondanini Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea in Rome, this poster reflects the growing international recognition of Fontana’s work during the late 1970s and his influence on contemporary colour photography. Franco Fontana (born 1933, Modena) is one of the most influential figures in contemporary colour photography. Beginning his career in the early 1960s, Fontana quickly distinguished himself through a radical approach to colour, transforming landscapes and urban scenes into compositions of pure colour fields and geometric structures. His work broke with the traditional documentary approach to photography, emphasizing instead the expressive and abstract potential of colour. Fontana’s images—often characterised by bold chromatic contrasts and minimalist compositions—have been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Today Fontana is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern colour photography, whose work has had a lasting influence on both fine art photography and visual design. See less
