David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The Pop Art Expressionist style artworks have been the subject of more than 400 solo exhibitions. Art works by Hockney are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Kenneth E. Tyler is considered by many to be the most accomplished Contemporary master printer and publisher. He is an arts educator and prominent figure in the American Post war revival of fine art limited edition printmaking. His technically advanced expertise and willingness to experiment on a bold scale drew many famous and influential artists to his workshops, among them David Hockney, Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns.
On a visit to Tyler's workshop in 1978, Hockney discovered paper pulp. After some experimentation he found that he could pigment and " paint " with this medium. The " Paper Pools " are a group of 95 paper pulp works created during a three month period of collaboration in 1978. Hockney concentrated on the Tyler swimming pool, he photographed, sketched, and studied it. Recording the water's light qualities and how they changed. During the project Tyler, directed by Hockney mixed hundreds of gallons of pigmented pulp. The result was some of David Hockney's most unique and iconic artworks.
