This Henri Matisse very rare vintage 1961 Mourlot fine art lithograph print custom framed French Mid Century Modernist landmark Paris exhibition poster " Le Danseur " 1937, is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The lithograph print poster is published by The Musee Des Arts Decoratifs, Paris. Printed in France in 1961 in an unnumbered limited edition by Mourlot-Imp. Paris, on the occasion of the " Les Grandes Gouaches Decoupees ( The Large Cut Out Gouaches ). It features an artwork image originally created by Matisse in 1937-38 titled " Le Danseur ".
This is a rare opportunity for true Matisse and French Modernism fans and collectors, as this coveted image fine art poster, considered by many to be one of the holy grails of Matisse art posters is long out of print and very scarce to find. The original artwork " Le Danseur " 1937-38, was sold at auction by Christies in 2009 with record results over 7.9 million dollars.
This original lithographic poster was created for the landmark exhibition in Paris ; one of the most celebrated showcases of Matisse's late work, dedicated entirely to his revolutionary paper cut-out technique. The exhibition brought this body of work to the Parisian public for the first time at monumental scale.
Matisse's fascination with color and his joi de vivre are inextricably bound up in his paper cut-outs. In the artist's late oeuvre, regarded as the peak of his output, color, line, and form are blended into a perfect synthesis. He famously said of these works of vividly colored cut papers that he " Drew with Scissors " cutting into the color as a sculptor cuts into stone. It was a historic moment in Modern Art : Matisse had discovered a brilliant and successful new method as a painter.
Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The 20th Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
This landmark fine art lithograph poster is from the collaboration and important long lasting partnership between the artist Matisse and Atelier Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. An example of this same fine art poster is held in the archive collection of The Musee Des Arts Decoratifs Paris, The Tate London, The Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of Modern Art New York, and other prestigious museums worldwide.
In the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
The Musee Des Arts Decoratifs was founded in 1905. The Paris museum dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of the decorative arts in located in the city's 1st Arondissement, it occupies The Pavillon De Marsan of The Palais Du Louvre. With approximately one million objects in its collection, it is the largest museum of decorative arts in continental Europe.
The rare out of print fine art lithograph print framed French Modernist exhibition poster measures 24 1/2" W X 32 1/2" H X 1 1/4" D.
It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass, expertly presented in a top mounted presentation on light taupe stone gray conservation matt board, in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish black wood recessed box museum style frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
It is in excellent " like new " condition. The poster print is in excellent " like new " vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and some light minor visible surface wear.
