Rare & Original Antique Heinrich Lossow Portfolio titled Götterdekameron translated "Twilight of the gods" Mythology Etchings Collection for your consideration. The etchings are in a binder that measures approx. 10 inches X 13 inches and approx. 1/2 of an inch thick. Each etching measures approx. 9 3/8 inches X 12 1/2 inches. Europe, late 19th Century. Etchings include erotic scenes of nude female frolicking with a cupid-like character; plates on classical themes. Each print is titled and numbered as follows: No. 1, "CUPIDO" No. 3, "LORELEI" No. 5, "JO" No. 7, "ARIADNE" No. 9, "BACCHANTIN" No. 10, "CUPIDO ALS SCHÃTZ" No. 11, "CUPIDO ALS FISCHER" No. 12, "CUPIDO ALS SIEGER". Each page reads, "Götterdekameron von Heinrich Lossow". "Lichtdruck: Römmler & Jonas, Dresden." and "Verlagseigenthum: Adolf Ackermann, München." Cover of binder has image of cupid doing a handstand; titled, "Götterdekameron por Heinrich Lossow". Paper label inside corner of binder cover reads, "G. FRITZSCHE BUCHBINDEREI LEIPZIG". Overall, good antique condition. Incomplete, 8 of 12 prints remain. Shows wear commensurate with age and use including but not limited to, soiling, minor stains, rough edges/corners to binder cover, corner tear to matte (No.1), etc... See photos. "German artist Heinrich Lossow was born in 1843 and studied art in Munich. He was an accomplished painter with a repertoire spanning various styles and genres.
Throughout his career, Lossow created many notable works, including portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes. His paintings are characterized by delicate brushwork, impressive color combinations, and a keen attention to detail. His work focused on themes such as love, beauty, and nature and often imparted a sense of romanticism.
One of Lossow's best-known portraits, Marie Antoinette (oil on canvas), fetched $14,173 at auction. The painting showcases the artistâs mastery of light and shadow, capturing the subject's delicacy and elegance.
Lossow's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the National Gallery in Berlin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He died in 1897." -Artnet
