Large antique embroidered textile suitable as a wall hanging, table cover, or decorative display piece, with a dramatic black center field and raised red botanical border.
This striking textile comes from the collection of my late brother, a gifted decorator with an extraordinary eye. David Halberstam once said of him, “He was the talent of his generation.”
The piece features a deep black central field framed by a wide red border of raised floral and botanical embroidery — stylized leaves, vines, and curling stems in shades of gold, olive, taupe, and brown. The embroidery has beautiful texture and dimension, giving the textile the presence of a decorative art object rather than simply a furnishing.
A textile restorer/expert who reviewed the piece informally believed it may be Portuguese and possibly quite early, perhaps 17th century, though I am not representing it as formally authenticated. The expert also noted that a value could be placed up to $4,999 without requiring a formal appraisal.
What I love about it is its drama and depth: the black center, rich red border, and raised leaf-and-vine embroidery give it a powerful Old World presence. It would be beautiful in a layered traditional, European, or eclectic interior.
This is a vintage/antique, pre-owned textile with signs of age, storage, and use consistent with the photographs. I have had the piece professionally restored, and it presents beautifully, with strong color, texture, and decorative impact. As with any older textile, there may be areas of fading, discoloration, worn or loose threads, minor edge wear, and natural irregularities in the embroidery and fabric. Please review all photographs carefully.
Because of its possible age and delicacy, I recommend professional textile cleaning or conservation only.
