Antique Staffordshire Blue Transfer "Corinthian" Pattern Soup Bowls, Set of Three, Circa 1820s–1840s
A charming and collectible set of three early 19th century Staffordshire blue transfer soup bowls in the "Corinthian" pattern — a classically named and beautifully executed blue transfer design bearing the elegant pattern name backstamp in a decorative floral berry wreath cartouche entirely consistent with the finest early Staffordshire transfer production of the 1820s and 1840s. The Corinthian pattern name — evoking the grandeur of ancient Greek classical architecture — reflects the period's deep fascination with Neoclassical ornament and the romantic vocabulary of the ancient world that pervades the best English ceramic design of the Regency and early Victorian era.
The blue transfer decoration is rendered with the crisp, detailed quality that distinguishes early Staffordshire production at its most accomplished, the rich cobalt blue playing beautifully against the clean white ceramic body in the classic combination that has made English blue and white transferware one of the most enduringly beloved and actively collected categories of antique ceramics. At 10 inches across these are generously proportioned and practical soup bowls — substantial enough for serious table use and impressive enough to display as a decorative group on a dresser or open shelf.
Crazing consistent with age is present throughout and entirely expected on pieces of this period. One bowl has minor chips on the foot ring and one has minor rim chips — honest condition notes appropriately reflected in the asking price. The third bowl presents in the cleanest condition of the three.
A sweet and genuinely period set of early Staffordshire blue transferware at an accessible and attractive price point for collectors of English ceramics.
