The saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large, iconic cactus native to the Sonoran Desert, known as a keystone species that provides food and shelter for many desert animals, with its distinctive arms that typically develop after 75 years. These slow-growing plants can live over 200 years, reaching up to 50 feet tall, and are protected in Saguaro National Park near Tucson, Arizona.
