Designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall circa 1959, the Declaration line brought Scandinavian-influenced modern discipline to American walnut case goods with results that remain as fresh and desirable today as when they first appeared.
The layout is the classic Declaration eight-drawer configuration: four smaller drawers in the upper register, four deeper drawers below, organized across two symmetrical banks flanking a subtle central division. The walnut is richly figured with the warm amber tones of quality American black walnut, and the construction is immaculate — clean joinery, precise drawer fitting, and the characteristic round tapered legs that give the piece its lifted, light quality. Everything unnecessary has been eliminated. Everything that remains is exactly right.
The original white porcelain ball knobs are the detail that makes Declaration collectors particularly happy — one of the two hardware options Drexel offered for the line (alongside brass), and the one that provides the most striking material contrast to the warm walnut case. These are original, intact, and in excellent order. Kipp Stewart, who worked with Charles and Ray Eames before the Declaration line and who passed in 2022, is recognized as one of the most important American furniture designers of the mid-century period.
