This signed pitcher was crafted by Evin Jason (EJ) King (1931–2010), a sixth-generation potter from Seagrove, North Carolina, and a descendant of the J.B. Cole pottery family.
Known for blending traditional craftsmanship with artistic flair, King produced many functional pieces like canister sets and bowls, but his hand-thrown works featuring colorful drip or splatter glazes inside and out are especially prized.
The son of Bascome King and Vellie Cole, he carried on a centuries-old Seagrove tradition, often showcasing vivid, organic glaze patterns like the blue, green, and purple splashes on this piece. Signed “EJ King” and dated 2002, the pitcher comes from the later years of his career, likely made at King’s Pottery, which he operated with his family.
Its abstract splashes, created with a splatter or sponge glaze, bring a modern twist to a classic form, with the flowing glaze from exterior to interior adding extra artistry and cohesion. Today, his daughter Crystal King continues the family’s ceramic legacy in Seagrove, creating folk art and “face jugs.”
