Designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall, fully stamped on the underside (Model 881-210-5, By Drexel, date code 1958), it is the table with the "circle of circles" — inlaid rosewood dots arranged in a ring at the center of the walnut top — one of the most recognizable decorative motifs in mid-century American furniture.
The Declaration line launched in the late 1950s and was made entirely in natural American black walnut. It was celebrated immediately: several pieces were selected by the U.S. government to represent American design at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Kipp Stewart — who had worked with Charles and Ray Eames — brought genuine design intelligence to every element of the collection, and the cocktail table has remained one of the most collected and admired pieces in the range ever since.
This example is fully documented with the original maker's stamp. The walnut is warm and well-figured. The rosewood dot inlay is intact and beautifully contrasted against the walnut field.
