There is something deeply romantic about these plates.
This set of six Czechoslovakian porcelain dessert plates dates to the golden era of Bohemian porcelain, most likely between 1918 and 1939, when the workshops of the first Czechoslovak Republic were producing some of the finest decorative china in Europe. The simple "Czechoslovakia" backstamp is the tell — a mark used almost exclusively during this interwar period, before additional wording was required for export.
Each plate is dressed in a lavishly gilded border of embossed scrollwork and floral garlands, the kind of heavy gold encrustation that was the hallmark of Central European porcelain at its most opulent. At the centre, a softly painted bouquet of roses and mixed blooms in pinks, purples, and blues — delicate against the ivory ground, and framed by the gold like a miniature painting.
The style draws heavily from Viennese Imperial taste, the aesthetic that swept through the grand households of Central Europe in the early twentieth century. These plates didn't sit in a kitchen cupboard. They came out for occasions.
The gilding remains rich and largely intact, and the set has the warm, slightly imperfect charm of pieces that have genuinely lived — not been hidden away.
A wonderful addition to a collected table, elegant interior, or displayed as a group on a wall or dresser. They are also, quietly, a little piece of European history.
