Antique American Albany Glazed Stoneware Crock, Circa 1900
A honest and characterful example of late 19th to early 20th century American utilitarian stoneware, this sturdy Albany glazed crock is a pleasing representative of the everyday pottery tradition that sustained American domestic and farm life for generations. The Albany slip glaze — a naturally occurring dark brown clay slip mined from the bed of the Hudson River near Albany, New York and used by American potters throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries — produces the rich, deep chocolate brown interior and exterior surface that collectors of American country pottery and farmhouse antiques find so immediately appealing and satisfying.
At 8¼ inches across and 7½ inches tall this is a well-proportioned and generously sized crock with considerable practical utility as well as decorative appeal — equally at home holding kitchen utensils, dried flowers, or displayed as part of a collection of American country stoneware. The warm, lustrous Albany glaze has deepened and mellowed beautifully over its more than a century of domestic service, acquiring the honest patina that only genuine age and use can produce.
No maker's mark is present — consistent with the production practices of many smaller American regional potteries of the period — and all wear and use marks are honest and entirely consistent with the crock's working life and age.
A solid, warm, and deeply American object at an accessible and honest price point.
