Antique Walnut Sheraton One Drawer Stand, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, Circa 1830s
A supremely satisfying and regionally distinctive example of early 19th-century Pennsylvania country furniture, this walnut one drawer stand is a textbook example of the Lebanon County Sheraton tradition at its most characteristic and appealing. The four meaty boldly turned legs — a hallmark of Lebanon County craftsmanship that sets these stands apart from their more refined urban counterparts — give the piece a robust, confident presence that is deeply rooted in the Pennsylvania German woodworking tradition.
The single board top is a particularly desirable feature, cut from a wide plank of beautifully figured walnut that speaks to the quality of timber available to Pennsylvania craftsmen in the 1830s and the maker's eye for selecting the finest material. The dovetailed drawer is finely constructed with crisp, carefully cut dovetails — the kind of hand work that reveals a craftsman who took genuine pride in the quality of his joinery even where it would rarely be seen. The tulip poplar secondary wood confirms the piece's Pennsylvania origin with certainty, as poplar was the overwhelmingly favored secondary wood of Pennsylvania German cabinetmakers throughout the Federal period.
The original glass knob survives intact — a delightful and authenticating detail that is increasingly rare to find undisturbed on pieces of this age. The original finish remains, presenting with the honest wear, use marks, and finish loss that nearly two centuries of domestic life inevitably impart, and adding immeasurably to the piece's authenticity and charm.
A wonderful example of Pennsylvania country Federal furniture with strong regional character and exceptional construction quality throughout.
