Alexander Dobkin (1908-1975), a painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, lecturer, and teacher, was born in Genoa, Italy. He immigrated to the United States in 1920 with his parents. He worked primarily in the expressionist style depicting images such as children, nudes, mother‐and‐child studies and personal impressions of Spain and Israel. He earned his Master of Art degree from Columbia University and also studied at the Leonardo da Vince Art School. He authored Principles of Figure Drawing in 1948 and Alexander Dobkin’s Travel Sketchbook in 1966.

His work is in the permanent collections of many prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Harvard Art Museum, the Hirshhorn Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Newark Museum, the Phoenix Fine Arts Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum.
