Could’ve been used for wood sculpting, or perhaps driving pegs into barn rafters.

The handle appears to be ash … when splashed and moisturized with tap water … and the head … when we splashed with tap water … appears to be partly … if not entirely … a piece of rare burled wood. (See the last 2 photos for its temporary water-splashed moisturized state.)

The handle and the mallet head are rock hard.

If you wanted to pull out the color, and grain, for a lasting look, you could simply wipe on some beeswax or any kind of furniture oil … or apply a thin coat of polyurethane for a more lasting satin finish.

After we had it “refinished” … and cleaned and sanded … we decided to leave it in its natural patina, for now.

Great coffee table piece or rustic kitchen decor.

It’s a beaut.
