A beautifully detailed antique cast iron garden bench in the classic “grapevine” pattern, marked John McLean NY, circa 1875.
A classic American cast iron garden bench in the sought-after “Grape” or "Grapevine" pattern, clearly marked John McLean NY and dating to circa 1875.
The design is richly modeled with grape clusters, curling vines, and broad leaves, all handled with a sculptural, Rococo sense of movement. Unlike many cast iron benches of the period, the form reads as entirely organic—composed of interlacing foliage and fruit—without obvious linear supports, giving it a fluid, almost free-form presence.
The splayed legs continue the motif, cast as clusters of leaves and grapes that extend gracefully to the ground, reinforcing the sense that the piece has grown rather than been constructed. This continuity across the form is part of what makes the pattern so appealing.
This example has developed a particularly attractive surface over time. Layers of old paint—black and silvery grey—have worn back to reveal areas of the underlying cast iron, creating a soft, mottled patina that works beautifully in both garden and interior settings.
Structurally sound with no apparent repairs. The delicate front apron, often the first area to suffer damage, remains intact and well defined—an important point for collectors. The casting retains crisp detail throughout.
A scarce survival from a 19th-century American foundry, with the added appeal of a clear maker’s mark.
