This poster celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1925 Paris World Expo. The event was held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs between 1976 and 1977. The poster is an almost exact replica of Robert Bonfils's 1925 poster which has become synonymous with the World Fair. Simple and elegant, this poster is in excellent condition.
Of the 1925 World Fair: "This exhibition epitomized what came to be called decades later "Art Deco," a "modern" style characterized by a streamlined classicism, geometric and symmetric compositions, and a sleek machine-age look. The Exposition poster, by Robert Bonfils, imitating the look of a woodblock print, featured a modern athletic nymph and a racing gazelle."
The 'modern athletic nymph' is actually a reference to Diana, a goddess of Roman mythology associated with woodland and wild animals, and hunting. According to Tag Gronberg, she symbolized the new modern woman: healthy, fast-moving, and light on her feet - appropriate characteristics for the athletic and fashionable.
