Original copperplate engraved by the celebrated Nuremberg cartographic publisher Johann Baptist Homann and issued by the Homann Heirs circa 1740 (plate dated 1739). Finely detailed and visually engaging mid-18th-century harbor map of Porto Bello (Portobelo), Panama,
Titled Portus Pulchri in Isthmo Panamensi, this attractive copperplate engraving depicts the strategic Caribbean port of Porto Bello—one of Spain’s most important colonial treasure ports—rendered with exceptional clarity. The composition centers on the protected harbor, with radiating compass bearings, coastal fortifications, soundings, anchored fleets, and a lively naval scene illustrating the British assault under Admiral Edward Vernon during the War of Jenkins’ Ear.
A detailed explanatory cartouche at lower left provides context for the engagement depicted, adding narrative depth uncommon in harbor plans of this scale.
Excellent condition. Dimensions: 17.5" x 15.5" (Mat), 16" x 10.25” (map)
